Schools – boost your results by becoming a FRED provider
‘When I see my children at the weekend they say, “We don’t want to go to McDonald’s – can we read stories instead?”.’
You probably already know how important dads can be to their children’s learning – and if you don’t, you can find out here. But how do you turn that understanding into practical, potentially life-changing action for the children at your school?
The answer is FRED (Fathers Reading Every Day), a supported reading programme which we can train you to deliver at your school for less than £100 per trainee.
FRED – a four-week programme you can run with fathers of children in any year group – has been shown to improve children’s reading accuracy, comprehension and rate of reading; their writing; and their behaviour. It can also improve attainment in maths – and acts as a great ‘way in’ to establishing wider engagement with fathers.
The quote above came from one of the dads at Jubilee Primary School in south east London, whose FRED coordinator Ursula Johnston says FRED is a great initiative. “It is focused and practical, not fluffy. Dads don’t like fluffy – they want to get down and do.”
