Not so Invisible? Supporting Young Fathers

Published: 12 January 2010

Two conferences:

Thursday 11th March 2010, Novotel Hotel, York

Thursday 25th March 2010, Resource Centre, London

These conferences, a collaboration between Young People in Focus (YPF), the Fatherhood Institute and the Teenage Pregnancy Unit (TPU) in the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), put the spotlight on work to support young fathers. They will explain the current policy context, what we know from UK and international research about young father involvement and give young fathers and mothers a platform to explain what the issues are from their point of view – what they want, and how services have helped them. Most importantly, the conferences will showcase the work of services and projects that are making a difference.

Topics covered:

  • Key current policy issues
  • Research messages – how supporting young fathers benefits children and mothers
  • Tackling the tough issues for practitioners – domestic violence and child protection
  • Successful ways of engaging/working with young fathers
  • Working with fathers-to-be
  • Issues in working with the youngest dads
  • Supporting young fathers in custody
  • Learning from the Family Nurse Partnership programme
  • Engaging dads in children’s centres

Contributors include:

  • Adrienne Burgess, Fatherhood Institute
  • Kathy Jones, Fatherhood Institute
